Question: Do you play any instruments?

Answer:  Unfortunately no I don’t but I would love to learn. I did buy a keyboard thinking I would start taking lessons but I have never had enough time to actually sit down and do it. So now I want to buy an acoustic guitar because I figure I can carry that around with me and teach myself.

Question: Have any of your songs been published? (If so, by whom?)

Answer: Yes my song Float Away is the most popular song that has been published and that was by Fiwi Music Calabash Productions and they have also released a few other songs. And I also have a song released by Suku from Ward 21, but little promotion has been done for that one. Right now I have a new single being released by Hotwire Productions and several others under different production companies to be released soon.

Question: Have you affiliated with a performance rights organization?

Answer: No, I have been talking to a few organizations, but nothing concrete has been established yet.

Question: What is your music background?

Answer: Music has always been a part of my life from my earliest memory. I grew up in a house of singers and performers. Growing up I sang in my school choirs as well as with friends on the side and we put together small shows in our school and our neighborhood, this is when I was living in Europe.

Question: Who would you say is your fan base ?

Answer: It’s been a mixture of all types of people, young and old from all cultures and backgrounds. I think because my music is rooted in soul mixed in with eclectic sounds from reggae, to afro beats, and even hip hop, it invites a very diverse audience.

Question: What are your songs about?

Answer: Mostly love, but I do write a lot about the struggles of the world. I actually have a song called “different kind” and its about seeing a man cry for the first time because of the struggles they face in the world and to me when I see a grown man cry you know its got to be bad, I’m influenced by personal experiences and experiences of those that are close to me so the topics vary.

Question: Do you write your own songs?

Answer: Yes I do, I write all my songs. Well so far I have.

Question: Who are your musical influences?

Answer: Many different artists for different reasons have influenced me, whether it is in their style of song, the way they play with their vocals, to the way they perform and they include Miriam Makeba, Brenda Fassie, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Thandiswa Mazwai, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Lady Saw, Tanya Stephens, Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, Corrinne Bailey Rae, Common, Amy Winehouse, and Goapele, just to name a few.

Question: How do you describe your music to people?

Answer: In three words Sexy Afro Funk!

Question: What are your long-term career goals?

Answer: I want to continue to sing and perform for as long as I can and be very successful at it.

Question: How would you define the word "success"?

Answer: Success to me means: accomplishment, not giving up at the most difficult moments, being happy, content, and comfortable.

Question: What live performance experience have you had?

Answer: I have performed in clubs, and soul cafes in Jamaica, Canada, and South Africa. I have yet to hit a big concert stage but I’m excited that it will be happening very soon.

Thank you!

MAMELA.
